Plays of the Year: Morris, Osgood Create TD

Posted Jan 28, 2014

Darryl Morris and 11-year veteran wide receiver Darryl Morris and Kassim Osgood teamed up to record the first of two 49ers special teams touchdowns in 2013, coming in at No. 9 on the countdown.

Over the next two weeks, 49ers.com will reveal the top 10 plays of the team's 2013 season. Each of the plays, which were voted on and ranked by 49ers Studios staff, will feature a highlight video. We continue our countdown at No. 9...

When

Midway through the fourth quarter of an Oct. 20, non-conference matchup.

Where

LP Field in Nashville, Tenn.

What

Morris darted his way down the field and ran through Tennessee Titans punt returner Darius Reynaud to force his first career fumble late in a Week 7 road victory. Once the football was loose, it quickly deflected off Morris’ lower body and bounced from Tennessee’s 11-yard line into the end zone where Osgood quickly pounced on top to score his first-career fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Who

Rookie cornerback Darryl Morris and 11-year veteran wide receiver Kassim Osgood teamed up to record the first of two San Francisco special teams touchdowns in 2013.

Why

Morris released off the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball and instantly beat the press-man block of Titans defensive back Tommie Campbell. Morris’ blistering speed allowed him to get directly into Reynaud’s line of vision and once the ball arrived at the punt returner’s body, the Titans running back bobbled the initial punt and had no time to look for the loose football. Once the ball was misjudged, Morris immediately crushed Reynaud in the open field. Next, the football quickly scooted into the end zone and Osgood hopped right on top, beating Campbell and Tennessee Pro Bowl cornerback Alterraun Verner to the football.

How

With the 49ers leading 24-0 entering the fourth quarter, Morris was given the opportunity to play as a gunner on punt team. Typically those perimeter roles were held for Osgood and safety C.J. Spillman. But with San Francisco holding on to a 24-3 lead before the Andy Lee punt, Morris was called into action to get a rep on punt team coverage.
