Morning Tailgate: The Future at Cornerback

Posted Feb 5, 2014

Today's Morning Tailgate looks at the 49ers future options at cornerback and discusses other key headlines.

Tramaine Brock should be considered as a lock to start in 2014.

The fourth-year cornerback, who was signed to a four-year contract extension in late November, led the 49ers with five interceptions and he did so in just seven starts.

Brock's aggressive style of play was well received by his teammates. He recorded 37 tackles and 15 pass breakups in 2013. Oh, and without Brock, there would be no such thing as "The Pick at The 'Stick."

The 5-foot-10, 197-pound cornerback out of Belhaven should be one of the team's key defensive difference makers in the coming seasons. At 25, Brock has plenty of good football ahead of him. The only question entering the offseason is who will start opposite of Brock in 2014?

Besides Brock, only Chris Culliver, Carlos Rogers, Darryl Morris and Dax Swanson are signed for 2014.

Tarell Brown, Perrish Cox (restricted) and Eric Wright will be free agents.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee offered his opinion on who will start at cornerback next season.

"Culliver is the favorite to play opposite Brock in 2014," Barrows wrote.
