Morning Tailgate: Super Bowl Countdown

Posted Jan 30, 2014

Which Super Bowl was the greatest ever? Our Morning Tailgate takes a look.

Super Bowl Sunday is just days away. And although it’s a downer that the San Francisco 49ers won’t be playing in the game, Super Bowl week always conjures up memories of past Super Bowl performances.

In that spirit, NFL.com media analyst Elliot Harrison ranked the top Super Bowls in league history.

Here’s where San Francisco’s six appearances ranked:

47. Super Bowl XXIV (49ers 55 – Broncos 10)
44. Super Bowl XXIX (49ers 49 – Chargers 26)
27. Super Bowl XIX (49ers 38 – Dolphins 16)
14. Super Bowl XVI (49ers 26 – Bengals 21)
13. Super Bowl XLVII (Ravens 34 – 49ers 31)
5. Super Bowl XXIII (49ers 20 – Bengals 16)

NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt offered this take on the memorable 49ers win over the Benglas in Super Bowl XXIII:

“The second of the Bengals-49ers Super Bowls was one of the best games. Of course there was the Montana play, but Tim Krumrie broke his leg, which changed the game. It was close throughout."

The game will forever be remembered for Joe Montana’s game-winning touchdown drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to John Taylor.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: 49ers Super Bowl Photos

More 49ers headlines can be found in today’s Morning Tailgate, presented by State Farm.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle looked at the 49ers options in signing Aldon Smith to a contract extension.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee evaluated the current depth of San Francisco’s outside linebackers.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com discussed the 49ers “window” with Colin Kaepernick.

Bill Williamson of ESPN.com looked at the Hall of Fame candidacy.
