Jim Harbaugh: Stadium Grass 'Will Be Like Augusta'

Posted Mar 28, 2014

While the 49ers coach said he is curious how wind will be a factor at Levi’s®, he won’t have much worrying to do about the field thanks to his favorite groundskeeper.

Jim Harbaugh has been preoccupied with a few matters this month.

The San Francisco 49ers coach helped with the team’s preparation for free agency, the NFL Draft and, this week, the league’s annual owners’ meetings.

But Harbaugh can’t wait to get his hands dirty at Levi’s® Stadium.

“You know what? I’m really going to dig into that when I get back,” Harbaugh told reporters in Orlando when asked about the 49ers new home, which opens this summer. “Been meaning to, been having to put it off the last couple weeks. But get over there and really check it out this week.”

While he said he is curious how wind will be a factor at Levi’s®, Harbaugh won’t have much worrying to do about the field.

“I know the grass is going to be great,” the coach said. “ It’ll be like a pool table, billiards table. Matt Greiner’s the finest groundskeeper there is. This will be like Augusta (National Golf Club) fairways.”

Greiner, the organization’s sports turf manager and head groundskeeper, is busy working on the new natural surface Levi’s®. Right now, sand fills the stadium floor, but 42-inch-wide strips of Bermuda Bandera will soon be brought from their home at West Coast Turf near Livingston, Calif.

Harbaugh has already caught himself creating divots in Greiner’s practice field, which sits at the team’s Santa Clara facility and just beyond Levi’s®.

“‘Aw, man, that was so nice,’” Harbaugh has catch himself saying after spiking some blades during a practice in recent seasons. “Then (we’ll) move the drill down 20 or 30 (yards)… I find myself picking it up and putting it back in and stepping on it a little bit.”
